Rogowski coils are flexible sensors that are used for the detection and measurement of electric currents. The absence of an internal metal core allows the coil to have a flexible and lightweight structure so that it can be hanged on the measured conductor. This feature, moreover, allows to accurately measure the AC component, avoiding the\its saturation.

How do Rogowski coils work?

It is based on a simple principle: an “air-cored” coil is placed around the conductor in a toroidal fashion; the magnetic field produced by the current induces a voltage in the coil. The voltage output is proportional to the rate of change of current. This voltage is integrated, thus producing an output proportional to the current. The output voltage is proportional to the change in current, and after an operational amplifier integrator, is proportional to the value of the current itself.
