The Expert's Eye- Our current transformers

Article 2 - What is a Current Transformer made of?

A current transformer (CT) enables the safe measurement of currents that can reach several hundred or even several thousand amperes by converting them into a signal that can be used by measuring and protection equipment.

But what is actually inside a current transformer?

🧲 The Magnetic Core: The Heart of the System

Everything starts with the magnetic core. Its role is to concentrate and guide the magnetic flux generated by the current being measured.

The performance of the transformer depends greatly on the quality and type of material used.

At TCT, several core technologies can be implemented, including Silicon Iron, Nickel Iron, and Nanocrystalline materials, in order to meet the accuracy and performance requirements of various applications.

🌀 Windings: Converting Electrical Information

The cores are wound with coils that enable the transformer to operate through electromagnetic induction.

When current flows through the primary winding, it generates a magnetic field that induces a proportional current in the secondary winding.

This principle allows measuring and protection devices to monitor an electrical network without being directly exposed to the high currents circulating in the installation.

🛡️ Insulation and Protection: Ensuring Reliability

A current transformer must be able to operate reliably over time, sometimes in harsh environments.

To achieve this, various protection solutions are used, including insulation, impregnation, tape wrapping, and epoxy coating.

These treatments improve mechanical strength, electrical insulation, and resistance to environmental stresses.

📦 The Housing: The Finishing Touch

The entire assembly is integrated into a housing that protects the component and facilitates its integration into electrical equipment.

It also contributes to the safety and robustness of the transformer throughout its service life.

Much More Than a Simple Component

At TCT, a current transformer is far more than a simple assembly of parts. It is the result of complete control over the entire value chain, from the magnetic core to the finished component.

Thanks to its long-standing expertise in magnetics, winding technologies, and associated processes, TCT designs and manufactures in France reliable, accurate current transformers tailored to the most demanding applications.
